Hank Freedman

Henry (Hank) Freedman was born into an Orthodox Jewish family in Boston in 1921 and served in the US armed forces during World War II. He was a machine gunner with the rank of technician fourth grade (the equivalent of sergeant) and fought in the famous Battle of the Bulge (the largest land battle in US military history), where his unit suffered 50% casualties. He was captured by the Germans on the battle’s easternmost front and spent more than three months as Nazi prisoner of war No. 23351 just before the war ended. Upon his release, a physical exam revealed that his emaciated frame had dwindled to 110 pounds. Hank has a poignant testimony about how the Lord preserved his life through one of the fiercest battles of WW II, then during his stay in Nazi prison camps, and finally allowed him to return home, arriving on VE Day in May of 1945. He was later awarded the Bronze Star and the medal of the French Legion of Honor for his service. His beloved wife of more than 50 years, Betty, died in 2004. Today Hank lives in Suwanee, Georgia, where he attends Shadowbrook Church and still (at age 96) drives himself to services. We are honored to welcome this remarkable man to our banquet this year!
